A recent research study analyzed the tweets of top trending topics. The researchers classified the trending topics based on the active period and the tweets and show that the majority (over 85%) of topics are headline news or persistent news in nature. As more individuals access their news sources online, it is interesting to consider the role of social networks and micro-blogging in sharing news information. The study by Kwak, Lee, Park & Moon (2010) is available in the ACM Digital Library.
