Most of our academic traditions are rooted in practices that are hundreds and hundreds of years old. They were largely designed to help industry produce a better quality of factory workers. Is that the case with the syllabus? Where do syllabi come from? What is their function? Most institutions have very specific rules about how it must be implemented, what kind(s) of information must be provided etc. These are largely rooted in contemporary fears regarding legal action.
